Leo Grewenig

Leo Grewenig studied at the Kassel Art Academy with Kay Nebel between 1921 and 1923. In 1924, he began his studies at the Weimar Bauhaus. He attended the preliminary course by László Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers and trained with Wassily Kandinsky in the class for wall-painting. He also attended lectures by Paul Klee and performed various colour exercises with him. He passed the journeyman’s examination of the Bauhaus in 1925. Between 1929 and 1931, he continued his painting studies at the Art School of Berlin-Schöneberg.
Following his position as an art educator in Saarland, he moved to Bensheim on the Bergstrasse in 1957 and produced an impressive amount of work before his death in 1991. His works can now be found in the Saarland Museum of Saarbrücken, the Art Gallery of Mannheim, the Weimar Classic Foundation, the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, the Museum Folkwang Essen, the Hessian State Museum of Darmstadt and the Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany.
